In this article you can find 10 good reasons as an encouragement for speaking and praying in tongues!
To some outsiders, praying in tongues (or “tongues”) may seem strange or like pointless “babble” (cf. Acts 2:12-13).
But speaking in tongues (or “prayer in tongues”, “prayer language”, “prayer in the Holy Spirit” etc.) is one of the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit (cf. 1 Corinthians 12-14).
God gives us good gifts and He has given each gift a purpose.
Praying in tongues is a meaningful, important and powerful tool that God wants to entrust to us!
First a very short explanation on the question: “What is speaking in tongues?”
“Speaking in tongues” is also called “Prayer in tongues” or “praying in tongues” or “praying or speaking in NEW languages” (or “prayer language”, “prayer in the Holy Spirit” etc.). This means (among other things) that God gives you a prayer language that you have not learned in the natural. A language which you (mostly) cannot understand yourself either. The Holy Spirit is giving you this language and you can speak it.
How to receive the gift of tongues
More on this how you can receive the gift of speaking and praying in tongues can you find at the end of this article.
Why 10 reasons for speaking and praying in tongues?
Some Christians who have received tongues themselves do not actually know what it is good for. Although they practice it from time to time, they have not yet discovered the blessings of this gift…
Other Christians do not yet have tongues and do not know why they should reach out for it. Perhaps they were not encouraged to do so because proper biblical teaching was lacking.
Here you can find the proper biblical teaching, encouragement and helpful tips for speaking and praying in tongues.
That’s why we’ve given you 10 reasons why it’s worth reaching out for this gift and practicing it more…

10 Biblical Reasons Every Christian Should Pray in Tongues:
1st reason:
Jesus himself announced the prayer in tongues
Shortly before Jesus went back to heaven, He gave the disciples important instructions:
On the one hand, He gave them the missionary mandate (which also applies to all Christians).
And on the other hand He announced to them the signs that the believers (that means: also all Christians) should follow:
“But these signs will accompany those who have believed: In my name they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues , serpents will pick them up, and if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them; They will lay hands on the sick and they will be well.”
(Mark 16:17-18 NLT, emphasis ours)
Jesus himself said here that praying in tongues applies to every Christian! For it is one of the signs that every believer can and should follow.
In addition, before His ascension, He instructed the disciples to remain in Jerusalem until they received “power from on high”:
“And behold, I send upon you the promise of my Father; but you remain in the city of Jerusalem until you are endowed with power from on high !”
(Luke 24:49 SLT; emphasis added)
“And while he was with them, he commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father, which ye [—he said—] heard from me, for John baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not long after these days.”
(Acts 1:4-5 SLT; emphasis added)
Reason 2:
When we pray together in tongues, we experience the oneness in spirit that we have with other Christians
The common experience of the disciples at Pentecost was speaking in new tongues.
Acts 2:1-13 (NLT; emphasis added) says:
“And when the day of Pentecost came, they were all with one accord. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and settled on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them to speak. Now there dwelt in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. Now when this noise arose, the crowd gathered and was dismayed; for each heard them speaking in their own language. But they were all astonished and marveled, and said to one another, Behold, are not these that are speaking all Galileans? Then why do we each hear them in our own language that we were born in? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and we inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia; Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and from the regions of Libya near Cyrene, and the Romans, Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs staying here— we hear them proclaiming the great deeds of God in our languages! And they were all amazed and perplexed, and said one to another, What is this supposed to be? But others mocked and said, “They are full of sweet wine!”
“…they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues…”: All the assembled believers received the prayer in tongues!
It is also said that they were “all in unanimity” . That means they were all spiritually hungry and expecting more from God – the power from on high that Jesus promised them. And their hunger has been answered!
Experiencing God’s presence together in worship is very valuable. This experience also strengthens our cohesion: We become aware that we are ONE heavenly family, ONE common Father (God) and all have the ONE Holy Spirit.
When we Christians pray together in tongues, we experience this unity that we have together in spirit (!). And for which Jesus also prayed for His disciples in John 17:20-21 (SLT):
“I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, like you, Father, in me and I in you; so that they too may be one in us, so that the world may believe that you sent me.”
The fact that Jesus meant a spiritual unity in the will of God is also clear from the story of the building of the Tower of Babel (can be read in Genesis 11:1-9). People tried to build unity, but without God. He then gave each person a different language, for up to that point they had spoken a common language. God thus resolved their false plan.
Because He had a better plan: At Pentecost, unity in the Holy Spirit and in God’s will was restored!
Not only the disciples at Pentecost, but also those who had become believers received the prayer in tongues. And you too can receive “your personal Pentecost”!
“While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And all the circumcised believers who came with Peter marveled, that the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the Gentiles also. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. (
Acts 10:44-46 NLT; emphasis ours)
“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. (
Acts 19:5-6 NLT; emphasis added)
Reason 3:
Praying in tongues (re)kindles the fire in us for Jesus and for evangelism
In addition, speaking in tongues rekindles our fire for Jesus and the burning desire to tell others about Him.
It may be that you are speaking in tongues and someone else knows the language you are speaking in – just as the disciples experienced at Pentecost. God can speak to non-believers in this way, touching their hearts and giving them a chance to repent. But that is a form of speaking in tongues, another form is praying in tongues for one’s own edification.
But praying in tongues also takes away your fear and inhibition about proclaiming Jesus. The Holy Spirit thereby fills you (newly) with His power and thus also with the necessary courage.
A good example of this is also Peter… He had promised Jesus that he would even die for Him (cf. Mark 14:26-31). But Peter failed and denied Jesus three times in a row (see Mark 14:66-72). Jesus forgave him (cf. John 21:15-23. But Peter lacked the power of the Holy Spirit until then. But at Pentecost he was the one who spoke boldly to the huge crowd about Jesus (cf. Acts 2:14- 36) He did not preach on his own, but driven by the Holy Spirit, and on that day around 3000 people (see Acts 2:41) were converted to Jesus!
Due to the rapid spread of the gospel (because the power of God was being demonstrated), the church experienced many persecutions. Struck and discouraged by this, they prayed:
“And now, Lord, behold their threats, and grant thy servants to speak thy word with all boldness, stretching out thy hand to heal, and that signs and wonders be done through the name of thy holy servant Jesus!”
(Acts 4:29-30)
And God answered their prayer with a new filling of the Holy Spirit (which we also need again and again):
“And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God with boldness.”
(Acts 4:31)
They prayed for boldness, but what gave them that boldness was the power of the Holy Spirit! Even when praying in tongues you can be filled with the power of God and encouraged again for evangelism.
4th reason:
When you pray in tongues you are praying in the will of God
Sometimes we do not know how and what to pray. Prayer can be difficult, especially in difficult situations, when we should pray. But when you’re struggling with a problem, your thoughts will always revolve around this one thing.
It is right to bring worries, fears, problems etc. before God. But if you pray with your troubled soul, you may bring these concerns to God over and over again , but you won’t calm down before Him.
Praying in tongues then gives you peace and clarity.
And you can trust that the words you pray in tongues are in the will of God and glorifying Him. Because the Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus and also leads you into a deeper relationship with Him. You can trust His words are good. And also in Corinthians 12:3 (SLT) it says:
“Therefore I let you know that no one who speaks in the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed; but neither can anyone call Jesus Lord except in the Holy Spirit.”
You don’t have to think about what to pray for. The Holy Spirit puts these words in your mind and you just speak them out. It may be that you hear the words in your mind, but there is a “flow” when you speak, where you don’t have to think.
“For when I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is fruitless.”
(1 Corinthians 14:14 NLT)
The Holy Spirit will give you the words to pray:
“But in the same way, the Spirit comes to the rescue of our weaknesses. For we do not know what to pray, as it should be; but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible sighs. But he who searches the heart knows what the motive of the spirit is; for he intercedes for the saints as befits God.”
(Romans 8:26-27 NLT)
It can also happen that God gives you prophetic impressions during the prayer in tongues and shows you what you should pray (before) in your mother tongue (see also the 5th reason!).
Reason 5:
Praying in tongues makes you receptive and sensitive to deep encounters with God and to the mysteries of God
When you become calm before God while praying in tongues and have your soul settled like a child with its mother (see Psalm 131:2), then you are freer and more open to receive from Him.
It will certainly be easier for you to quietly enjoy His presence when your mind is no longer occupied with other things.
You will also become more aware of the unity with God: God himself has taken up residence in you! And His glory is within you, working through you into this world (see also Colossians 1:26-27 (NLT, emphasis added):
“[namely] the mystery which was hidden from the ages and generations, but which has now been made manifest to his saints. God wanted to make known to them what the riches of glory of this mystery are among the Gentiles, namely, Christ in you, the hope of glory. “
You enter the space of the spirit, so to speak – although you are already there with your spirit , you become aware of it when praying in tongues and it becomes tangible .
The Holy Spirit reveals the heart of God to your heart: His person, His character, His will, etc.:
But, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no human heart has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”. But God revealed it to us through his Spirit ; for the spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the [thoughts] of man except the spirit of man that is in him? Likewise, no one knows the [thoughts] of God except the Spirit of God. But we did not receive the spirit of the world, but the spirit that is from God, so that we can know what God has given us .”
(1 Corinthians 2:9-12 SLT; emphasis ours)
For God is spirit and also your inner man is spirit. When you pray in tongues you have “spirit to spirit” contact.
And spiritual truths such as the Trinity of God, your unity with God, the unity of all believers and much more can also be experienced (often better) when praying in tongues. Because we can’t understand it with our mind. We need a revelation from God. Just as one cannot “understand” the Bible without the Holy Spirit if one reads it without His revealing power (see also John 6:63 and 2 Corinthians 3:6). For what is spiritual must be recognized spiritually:
“The natural man does not accept what is of the Spirit of God; for it is folly to him, and he cannot know it, because it must be judged spiritually.”
(1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV)
When praying in tongues you pray “mysteries” in spirit:
“For whoever speaks in tongues does not speak for men, but for God; for no one understands, but he speaks mysteries in the spirit.”
(1 Corinthians 14:2 NLT)
On the one hand, these secrets are intimate conversations between you and God. On the other hand, you pray in tongues what the Holy Spirit tells you: His will for you, for a situation, for a specific person, etc. You often don’t know yourself what you’re praying, and you don’t always have to know it.
But sometimes it can be that God wants to reveal it to you. Just like trusted friends confide secrets. We are friends of God (see also John 15:15) and God sometimes wants to include us in what He wants to do.
So it may be that He gives you the interpretation of your tongues. This means that you then mentally receive the meaning of your words (as a sensation, words, thoughts or images). Or you get prophetic impressions during praying/speaking in tongues, which are not the interpretation, but independently of it a speaking of God. Because speaking in tongues makes you receptive to revelations from God. These can be solutions or encouragement: for the situation, for yourself or for the other person who may be on your mind.
And so you can see the situation “in spirit” and also pray in your mother tongue what HE shows you! Because God also wants to work with you in prayer in “teamwork”.
Reason 6:
When you pray in tongues, you give control to the Holy Spirit
When praying in tongues you pray with the Holy Spirit in “teamwork”. You allow Him to use your tongue and give you the words He wants you to say. In this way you give the Holy Spirit control and let Him guide you. Because: The Holy Spirit is God and He has every right to be in control of our lives.
Perhaps you think that the Holy Spirit “only” uses our tongues when praying in tongues and you ask yourself what the big difference is that? As I said, speaking in tongues has great power. And words can also have a great impact that we must not underestimate.
The Bible says a lot about the power of words. Here is one of many Bible verses that also expresses that we reap our “seed of words”:
“Man is satisfied with the fruit of his mouth, he eats his fill with the fruit of his lips. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and whoever loves it will eat its fruit.”
(Proverbs 18:20-21 NLT)
Often times we “steer” our tongues ourselves, say things we shouldn’t say and later regret. With what we say, we often sin and hurt others. And not only that: The Bible text shows us that our words can also determine our whole life. We (often) “reap” what we say.
And let’s also read this text from James 3:3-12 (SLT) carefully:
“Behold, we put the bridles in the horses’ mouths so that they obey us, and thus we govern their whole bodies. Behold, even the ships, however large they are, and however rough the winds that drive them, they are steered by a very small oar where the helmsman’s intention is. So also the tongue is a small member and yet boasts of great things. Behold, a small fire—what a great forest it kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. Thus the tongue takes its place among our limbs; it defiles the whole body and sets fire to the periphery of life and is itself set on fire by Hell. For every kind of wild beast and bird, reptile and sea creature is and has been subdued by human nature; but no man can conquer the tongue, the irrepressible evil full of deadly poison! With it we praise God the Father, and with it we curse men who are made in the image of God; from one and the same mouth comes praise and cursing. It shouldn’t be like this, my brothers! Does a spring also spurt out sweet and bitter from the same opening? Also, my brethren, can a fig tree bear olives, or a vine figs? So neither can a spring give salty and sweet water.” my brethren, a fig tree bear olives, or a vine figs? So neither can a spring give salty and sweet water.” my brethren, a fig tree bear olives, or a vine figs? So neither can a spring give salty and sweet water.”
(James 3:3-12)
This text expresses in a very good way the great power of our words. Now think about it: How much more power do they have if we let the Holy Spirit guide our tongues…!
When I was unsure about praying in tongues myself at the beginning, I had received exactly this Bible text from James 3:3-12 as an answer and encouragement from God. Through this text, He showed me how we give the Holy Spirit control of our tongues and how He uses us to bless. I got this simple explanation:
ship = yourself
Rudder/rudder = your tongue
Who guides/The helmsman = The Holy Spirit
So our words in tongues have far greater power, and in a positive way! Because when you let the Holy Spirit “guide” your tongue, you don’t sin. And you allow yourself to be changed in your words and in your lifestyle. You will see much of this good fruit in your life… So trust your words to make a big difference (even when you don’t see it in the natural).
So praying in tongues trains you to trust God, to lean back and to be used as His vessel (see also 2 Corinthians 4:7). You learn to go under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and to let Him use you in other ways in everyday life, at work and wherever you are. As already mentioned, it makes you sensitive to him. The Holy Spirit wants to work vessels into this world through us.
Reason 7:
Praying in tongues strengthens your faith
So, speaking in tongues also helps you trust God by giving Him control of your tongue. And so it also strengthens your faith.
When you pray in tongues you will be built up:
“He who speaks in a language edifies himself; but he who prophesies builds up the church.”
(1 Corinthians 14:4 SLT)
But praying in tongues not only builds you up, but also your faith in God:
“But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faithand pray in the Holy Spirit;”
(Jude 1:20 SLT)
Why it is like that? – Praying in tongues makes you aware of the truths of God (as already mentioned in the 5th reason). Such spiritual revelations strengthen your relationship with God, as you will come to know Him more and more! This will increase your faith.
And do you know that the meaning of faith is not “willpower” through one’s own effort, but childlike “trust”? For God only expects us to reach out to him, to be loved by him and to pass on his love (see also Mark 12:29-31 and John 13:34).
You can also imagine the growth of faith in the image of a tree:
A tree has to let its roots grow deep into the ground in order not to fall over in a storm. And He needs long roots to drink from the water in the ground.
When you pray in tongues, your faith in God becomes more deeply rooted, like a tree digging its roots deep into the ground and drinking from the water and being refreshed.
Especially in difficult times we have to trust that God is still good and with us. Praying in tongues can help us and keep us “fresh” like a tree planted by streams of water:
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose confidence is in the Lord! For he will be like a tree planted by the water and stretching out its roots by the stream, not afraid of the heat when it comes, but its leaves remain green; even in a dry year he need not worry, and he does not cease to bear fruit.”
(Jeremiah 17:7-8 NLT)
And these Spirit-led words, as I said, have great power:
“A wholesome tongue is a tree of life,
but when it is perverse it wounds the spirit.”
(Proverbs 15:4 NLT; emphasis added)
Praying in tongues fills you with life and healing!
8th reason:
Praying in tongues gives you refreshment and new strength
As already mentioned, praying in tongues rebuilds us:
“He who speaks in a language edifies himself; but he who prophesies builds up the church.”
(1 Corinthians 14:4 SLT)
Anyone who has ever prayed in tongues knows how constructive this close communion with the Holy Spirit is.
The Holy Spirit is in us and flows through us, which we become more aware of when we pray in tongues.
It refreshes your mind and overflowing both soul and body. Like a garden being watered. Or like a pond that gets a supply of fresh water. Without water, the garden would wither… And without fresh water in the pond, the water in it would overturn and the fish would die…
It is God’s will to refresh us and give us new strength:
“He gives power to the weary and strength enough to the impotent. boys grow weary and weary, and young men stumble and fall; But those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength, so that they mount up with wings like eagles, so that they run and do not get tired, so that they walk and do not get tired.”
(Isaiah 40:29-31 NLT)
The Holy Spirit is the living water with which God wants to refresh us again and again:
“But on the last, the great day of the festival, Jesus got up and cried out and said: If anyone is thirsty, come to me and drink! Whoever believes in me, as the Scriptures said, streams of living water will flow out of his body. But this he said of the Spirit, which should be received by those who believe in him; for the Holy Spirit was not yet there, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
(John 7:37-39 NLT)
The Holy Spirit is the living stream before the throne of God:
“And he showed me a pure stream of the water of life, shining like crystal, emanating from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle between their road and the river, on this side and on that side, [was] the tree of life, bearing fruit twelve times, giving its fruit every month, one each; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.”
(Revelation 22:1-2 NLT)
As a child of God, you already have access to this stream in the spirit (see also Hebrews 4:16)!
And when you pray in tongues you will be filled with this living water.
Reason 9:
Praying in tongues enables you to worship in spirit and in truth
When you pray in tongues you become aware that you are standing before the throne of God.
You worship God in spirit and in truth.
Jesus said about it:
“But the hour is coming, and is already here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeks such worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
(John 4:23-24 NLT)
The words in tongues flow from the Holy Spirit into your spirit and towards the throne of God… And your words then also correspond to the truth of God. So it is (of course with the right heart attitude, the love for God) pure worship in spirit and in truth!
Especially when we are overwhelmed by God’s greatness and beauty, we can simply pray in tongues without thinking about the right words. It can often be the case that we “overflow in tongues” in the process.
You can also start chanting in spirit or in tongues/tongues:
“How should it be now? I want to pray with the spirit, but I also want to pray with the mind; I want to sing praises with the spirit, but I also want to sing praises with the mind.”
(1 Corinthians 14:15 NLT)
You can speak and sing in tongues just as you can in your mother tongue.
You can also sing in tongues/tongues with other Christians in common worship.
And it can also happen that you receive the interpretation of the tongues singing or prophetic impressions during the worship. You can then pass on these impressions in the respective context. You can also sing the impressions and pass them on as a song (if you like and have the impulse in your mind). Such a prophetic song can also bring about great spiritual breakthroughs.
As an example of singing in tongues see the article with a music recording: Heavenly Sounds – New Sound For A New Time
Reason 10:
Praying in tongues is a powerful weapon in spiritual warfare
The devil hates speaking in tongues. Therefore, this gift is often attacked by Satan.
Satan is trying to prevent Christians from receiving tongues. But also taking the time to practice it.
You may therefore have doubts as to whether your prayer in tongues is really “genuine” and from God. Then stand on the truth and promises from the Word of God, the Bible, that praying in tongues is good and every Christian is entitled to it.
Praying in tongues is a very important and effective weapon, especially in spiritual battles. Because if it’s a spiritual fight, then you have to fight with spiritual weapons.
The devil also likes to attack our feelings and thoughts. When you pray in tongues you become calm inside and aware of IN God (and God IN you).
When you pray in tongues you also use the authority that Jesus gave to us believers. Authority over all the works of the enemy (see Luke 10:17-20 and Mark 16:17-18). You can command demons to come out of a person in the name of Jesus. But if you are unsure yourself or it doesn’t work, praying in tongues helps. We have heard of Christians praying in tongues during the exorcism of others. The demons could not bear the words of the Holy Spirit and went out. This is the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised us!
The “armour of God” is also described in Ephesians 6:10-20. It also says of “prayer and supplication in the spirit”:
“and take also the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, praying at all times with every prayer and supplication in the Spirit , and for this purpose watching with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints,”
( Ephesians 6:17-18 NLT)
Praying in tongues really helps to stay longer in prayer and to remain calm, especially when faced with spiritual attacks.
Don’t let the devil stop you from using this precious gift of the Holy Spirit.
Would you like to receive the prayer in tongues from God?
First of all, we hope these 10 Bible reasons have encouraged you to practice praying in tongues.
And if you already have the gift of praying in tongues, that it will be rekindled in you, just as Paul’s wish for Timothy was:
“For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gracious gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands;”
(2 Timothy 1: 6 NLT)
If you don’t have the prayer in tongues yet:
First things first:
Jesus is the Baptist in the Holy Spirit (see Mark 1:6-8 and John 1:32-34).
In order to receive the gift of praying in tongues from God, you must have surrendered your life to Jesus! About the surrender of life, please first see the message at this link: “Message For You! The Best Message In The World In Your Own Language”
If you have already given your life to Jesus and you do not yet have tongues, then you can ask God for it right now.
A simple prayer is enough, in which you tell God that you also want to pray in tongues.
And then just worship Him, first in your native tongue and expect that the tongues will then flow as you pray. Do not do this with pressure, but direct your focus on Jesus.
