Christmas and hope

If we look at the world at this time, then a lot of it looks rather dark and gloomy. At this time of year, the nights are longest in the Northern Hemisphere. The days are short, which means there is less (natural) light at this time of the year.

The world also looks darker.

Even in the time about 2,000 years ago when Jesus Christ came into the world, it also looked dark and gloomy. Especially in Galilee, where Jesus grew up and later worked a lot.
Jesus came into the world as Light (see John 1:9). People need Him and His Light … then and now.

A verse from the Bible:

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”
(Isaiah 9:2 NIV)

What Christmas is really about

In Luke 2:10-11 (NIV) an angel announces the birth of Jesus to the shepherds:

“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Christmas means that Jesus Christ came into this world as a man. He came to reconcile us to God. On the cross, Jesus carried everything that stood and could ever stand between us and God. He paid for our guilt and sin. He took it upon Himself because He loves us.

And Jesus made a way for all people to come to God through Him.

Jesus offers people the Eternal Life (salvation) as a free gift. But everyone decides for themselves whether they want to accept and unwrap the gift.

A verse from the Bible:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
(John 3:16 NIV)

It is therefore important that you have accepted what Jesus did for you on the cross and that you have accepted and unwrapped the gift, so to speak.

After the shepherds were at the manger in Luke 2, and they had seen and experienced Jesus themselves, they shared and passed on the message. So to speak, they passed on the gift:

“When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child”
(Luke 2:17 NIV)

That’s why the Christmas season is a good time to reach people with the message of the Gospel.
